About

GW has significant engagement and impact within the District of Columbia. While some of this data is captured at the individual faculty member level through the non-academic service listed in Lyterati, much is not captured.

We are gathering this information for a variety of purposes, including to document community engagement practices, catalyze improvements and linkages among community-engaged work, inform the public and DC officials, and support self-study, the Carnegie Classification for Community Engagement, and other accrediting processes.

This survey will collect information about GW engagement in our three primary areas of activity:

  1. Teaching and learning

  2. Research and scholarship

  3. Outreach and engagement

*Carnegie Definition of Community Engagement

Community engagement describes the collaboration between institutions of higher education and their larger communities (local, regional/state, national, global) for the mutually beneficial exchange of knowledge and resources in a context of partnership and reciprocity.

The purpose of community engagement is the partnership of college and university knowledge and resources with those of the public and private sectors to enrich scholarship, research, and creative activity; enhance curriculum, teaching and learning; prepare educated, engaged citizens; strengthen democratic values and civic responsibility; address critical societal issues; and contribute to the public good.”

Some of your public engagement may fit this definition of reciprocity and co-creation of knowledge, other scholarship may be rightly considered outreach scholarship, in which you present to community groups or the public by providing information or expertise wholly developed within the university but of interest or benefit to the public.
